IIIC Heritage Retreat
July 22 - 26, 2015 – Scotland
Invitation from President-elect Graham Barrett
Pay Tribute to IIIC's Founder
London will be an ideal location to meet and pay tribute to our founder Harold Ridley as well as an opportunity to have a business meeting prior to the beginning of our 10th retreat. The first meeting where it was decided to establish the IIIC was held at the Royal Society of Medicine, but many meetings at the time were actually held at Chandos House which is an elegant Georgian townhouse close by. Chandos House is located in the heart of London and an ideal location for our group to meet in London on the eve prior to our departure for Gleneagles.
Stop in Edinburgh
The next day we departed from Heathrow airport for a short flight to Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. This has to be one of the most interesting cities in Europe, steeped in history and overlooked by the impressive Edinburgh Castle. We will have lunch close to and have time for a look around the castle and its museums before the coach departs to our destination - the highland retreat of Gleneagles for the next few days.
Stay at one of the World’s Grand Resorts
Gleneagles has to be one of the most beautiful 5 star resorts I have had the pleasure of visiting. It is surrounded by a large estate and meticulously groomed golf courses. The resort is of course home to the Ryder’s cup. This will be a perfect opportunity for the keen golfer in our group, and we plan to hold a tournament each day. The rooms in the hotel are luxurious but the hotel manages to maintain a friendly relaxed atmosphere at all times.

The academic program will be of the highest standard. The members of the club are by definition the most accomplished ophthalmologist in the field of cataract and implant surgery so the meeting content will reflect that talent. This is an opportunity to examine issues in more detail and more openly than in larger congresses and I envisage there will be as much time allocated for discussion as presentation!
Post-retreat Excursion
We will board the luxurious Royal Scotsman at Gleneagles. The cabins and dining cars are a work of art and I cannot think of a more relaxed way to experience the natural beauty of the highlands of Scotland with friends. We will spend two nights on the train before returning to Edinburgh and the end of an unforgettable journey and retreat.
