Friday, July 24, 2015: Visit magnificent Glamis Castle

The partner programme this morning will be a private guided visit to magnificent Glamis Castle famed for its connections to the British royal family and many other myths and legends in history and literature.

Glamis Castle has been the family home of the Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorn since 1372 when Sir John Lyon was granted the land of Glamis by King Robert II. In 1376 Sir John married the King's daughter, Princess Joanna. Since then Glamis has been visited and lived in by many members of the Scottish and British royal families. It was the childhood home of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother and the birthplace of HRH The Princess Margaret. It is now the seat of the 18th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorn, Michael Bowes-Lyon, a former Captain of the British Army, who succeeded to the earldom in 1987.

Entering the Castle grounds through a beautifully crafted gate, commemorating HM, The Queen Mothers 80th Birthday, you will drive down the mile-long, tree-lined avenue, to be welcomed at the 17th century front door.  A private guide will escort you through the castle's State Rooms and the private apartments of HM Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother and entertain you with the castles unique history, myths, legends and ghost stories.

The Royal Apartments are unique to Glamis as they constitute a suite of rooms arranged by the 13th Countess of Strathmore following the marriage of her daughter, Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon to Albert Duke of York in 1923. In 1936 the couple ascended the throne as HRH King George VI and HRH Queen Elizabeth and as such she was the last Empress of India.

Visit Duncan’s Hall, one of the oldest parts of the castle, which features in William Shakespeare’s Macbeth as the setting for the slaying of King Duncan by Macbeth.

Morning refreshments will be served privately in the 16th century vaulted kitchen prior to returning to Gleneagles.

The Tay flows through splendid scenery of Perthshire, one of Scotland’s most beautiful and enchanting counties, set amidst stunning and scenic wilderness, this guarantees to be an unforgettable fishing experience.

Saturday, July 25, 2015: Tour Scone Palace in Perthshire

The private partner programme will be a half day tour to Scone Palace in Perthshire which is the seat of the Earl and Countess of Mansfield whose family have lived there for over 400 years.

Fifteen hundred years ago it was the capital of the Pictish Kingdom and centre of the ancient Celtic church. In the intervening centuries it has been the home of Parliaments, the crowning place of kings and immortalised in Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Visit the grounds where beautiful blue, green and albino peacocks roam freely. Walk through what was the abbey and the site of the old village of Scone where all that remains is the market cross. On Moot hill in front of the 19th century gothic chapel stands a replica of the Stone of Destiny or Stone of Scone where for centuries kings were crowned and nobles knelt to pay homage. In a tree hangs the bell that was rung every time Parliament passed a new law.

Highlights include the State Dining Room and State Drawing Room, with walls clad in 19th century Chinese silks and the magnificent Long Gallery, dating back to 1580.

View the Queen Victoria’s bedroom and the Lennox Room where the bed hanging that Mary Queen of Scots made in captivity at Loch Leven Castle is on display. In addition, there is a wonderful collection of paintings and antiques, in particular, ivories, porcelain, clocks and tapestries, including a Riesener writing desk given to the 2nd Earl of Mansfield by Marie-Antoinette.

See the 18th century painting of Dido Elizabeth Belle and her cousin Lady Elizabeth Murray, attributed to German neoclassical artist Johann Zoffany. They were the subjects of the recent film, Belle, which shows Dido's life as the mixed-race natural daughter of a Royal Navy captain who was raised by her Uncle William, the 1st Earl of Mansfield.

Refreshments will be served privately in the former private apartments of the Earl of Mansfield prior to returning to Gleneagles.
